IHC orders Islamabad police to release Parvez Elahi

In a significant legal development, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) issued a decisive ruling on Tuesday, putting an end to the detention of Parvez Elahi, the President of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), under the 3-MPO (Maintenance of Public Order) regulations. The court directed the Islamabad police to promptly release him from custody.

Parvez Elahi, a former chief minister of Punjab, found himself back in the custody of the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) police shortly after his release by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on September 1, following a decision by the Lahore High Court (LHC).

In response to this latest detention, Parvez Elahi swiftly filed a petition with the Islamabad High Court, challenging his arrest by the Islamabad police under the 3-MPO provisions. The initial arrest of Mr. Elahi on June 1 was related to a corruption case involving Rs70 million, specifically pertaining to the alleged misappropriation of development funds designated for the Gujrat district.

Parvez Elahi, a prominent figure within PTI and a close aide to Chairman Imran Khan, has endured a prolonged period of custody over the past approximately two and a half months, despite being released multiple times on court orders. Each time he was set free, he faced swift re-arrest.

This series of events unfolded during a concerted crackdown against the leadership of the PTI, initiated in the wake of the May 9 riots. The Islamabad High Court's decision to halt Parvez Elahi's detention represents a significant development in this ongoing legal saga.
